Although it is very difficult and creates a lot of tool wear, nitinol can be machined using conventional equipment and techniques: milling, turning, grinding, etc. Carbide tooling and a coolant flood are strongly recommended.
Nitinol can also be machined via either laser or EDM. Nitinol stents are routinely laser machined out of nitinol tubing. In the case of laser or EDM machining, a recast layer and heat-affected zone are typically present and should be removed to enhance fatigue endurance and corrosion properties.
